Does Thali have the South Asian foods I actually eat?+
Yes. Thali has 8,000+ foods, Indian first, including 1,014 hand-reviewed Indian dishes from ICMR-NIN's Indian Food Composition Tables, plus Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi foods. You can also scan a dish with your camera: the AI only identifies the dish, and the nutrition comes from our food database. See the data sources page for where the nutrition data comes from.
Why does Thali use different BMI thresholds?+
South Asian bodies carry metabolic risk at lower BMI values than Western populations. WHO and major health bodies now recommend "overweight" starts at BMI 23 or higher (not 25) and "obese" at 27.5 or higher (not 30) for South Asians. Using Western thresholds systematically underestimates your risk. Thali uses the South Asian thresholds so your health picture is accurate.
What units can I log food in?+
Thali supports grams, ml, oz, cups (US/UK/AU), tablespoons, teaspoons, and katori (150ml, the standard Indian bowl). Most food database apps only offer grams, which is useless when your mom serves in katories. We built the unit system around how South Asians actually measure food.
How does the AI photo scan work?+
Take a photo of your meal in the app. The photo is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, which passes it to a third-party vision model, either Google (Gemini) or OpenAI (GPT-4o), to identify the dish and estimate a confidence level (high, medium or low). Thali then looks up the nutrition for that dish in its own database. Photos are not stored after processing. Free users get a daily allowance of scans, at least one a day, more in some regions, and the exact number is always shown in the app. Premium gets 50 a day. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what is sent and to whom.
Does Thali support fasting for Ramadan or Navratri?+
Yes. Thali has a fasting mode with Sehri and Iftar times worked out from where you are, using your mosque's calculation method, and fasting-safe food flags for Navratri, Ekadashi and Jain fasts. Fasting is part of life for a large part of the South Asian diaspora.
Is Thali a medical tool?+
No. Thali is a personal nutrition tracking app, not a medical device or clinical tool. The calorie targets and BMI thresholds are general health references. For medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.
